Description of ISTEXT Function

  • It is one of the built-in functions in Excel.
  • The ISTEXT function will return TRUE if the cell contains text data. Or else, it returns FALSE.
  • With the help of this function, you can quickly check if the cell contains a text value or a numeric value entered as a text.
  • In case, the cell contains a value other than text or the cell is empty, this function returns FALSE.

Syntax

  • Here, you will see the syntax of the ISTEXT function.
  • To apply this function on your spreadsheet, you have to select a cell and enter the formula in the following format.
  • Once you enter the formula, just click on the Enter button to get the result.

=ISTEXT(value)

  • Value – The value that you want to check.

Let’s look at some examples of the ISTEXT function and analyze how to use it in the Excel worksheet.

  • Initially, you have to open your Excel workbook on your PC and launch a worksheet that has data.
  • Usually, when you launch the new workbook, all the cells are in general format.
  • If you want to apply text format for some of your cells, then go to the Home tab, click on the Number Format drop-down list under the Number section and select the Text option from the menu.

  • For instance, we have entered the input text value in cell B3, as shown in the below screenshot.

  • You have to enter the above-mentioned formula to get the result.
  • To get the output, hit the Enter button on your keyboard.

  • As we said earlier, the ISTEXT function returns TRUE if the cell contains text data. Otherwise, it returns FALSE.
  • After executing the formula it gives the result, as shown in the below image.

  • Let’s see one more example to make it clear. In the following example, we have mentioned the input number as a text value, so it returns the value TRUE.

    • Cell B3 is empty, so it returns the result as FALSE.
    • We have mentioned a date format is cell B4, so that it returns FALSE.
