The word length is abbreviated as LEN. Usually, the length is a measure of distance. We can find the height or width of the specific thing with this measurement. In Excel, sometimes we want to count the characters that are appeared in a specific cell, and doing it manually is a bit challenging. To find the length of the string or given value on your spreadsheet, then you need to use the LEN function to get the length.

Description of LEN Function

  • LEN is one of the built-in functions provided by Microsoft Excel. And you can use this function to find the length of the given text string on the spreadsheet.
  • The LEN Function in Excel returns the length based on the given text string.
  • LEN will also count characters in numbers, symbols, and also mathematical characters.
  • If you give any space or comma in the value, it will be counted.
  • It also counts the decimal points and negative symbols.
  • In case, you apply any formatting to the data, it will count the digits only and exclude the formatting.

  • Step 1: Initially, you have to open your Excel workbook on your PC and launch a worksheet that has data.
  • Step 2: For example, we enter the following data in a spreadsheet in a range B3:B5.

  • Step 4: For that, we enter the above-given formula in Cell D3, D4 & D5 and click on the Enter button.
