Description of IMAGINARY Function

  • It is one of the built-in functions in Microsoft Excel.
  • This function returns the Imaginary Co-efficient of a given complex number.
  • For example, consider the complex number a+bi. After applying the IMAGINARY function, it returns the value b.
  • Where “a” is a real part, and “b” is an imaginary part.

Syntax

  • Here, you will see the syntax of the IMAGINARY function.
  • To apply this function on your spreadsheet, you must select a cell and enter the formula in the following format.
  • Once you enter the formula, click the Enter button to get the result.

=IMAGINARY(inumber)

Argument Explanation:

  • Inumber – A complex number in which you want to get the Imaginary co-efficient.

Note: You can use the COMPLEX function to convert real and imaginary coefficients to a complex number.

Examples

The following example has shown how it gets the imaginary part of the complex number using this function.

  • Initially, you have to open your Excel workbook on your PC and launch the worksheet with data.
  • For instance, we have given the input values in the range B3:B6. And we will get the imaginary part of the given values using the IMAGINARY function.
