We can enter or insert the data within these cells and perform calculations using the built-in functions and formulas. If you want to find the variance of a population based on given data, you can use the VAR function.

Description of VAR Function

  • It is one of the built-in functions in Microsoft Excel.
  • This function is used to find the variance of the given data.
  • It can be manually calculated by using the below-given formula.

Syntax

  • Here, you will see the syntax of the VAR function.
  • To apply this function on your spreadsheet, you have to select a cell and enter the formula in the following format.
  • Once you enter the formula, just click on the Enter button to get the result.

=VAR(number1, [number2], …)

Parameters Description

  • Number 1 – It is the first input number or cell reference.
  • Number 2 – It is an optional one. It can be a number or cell reference.

Note:
1) The arguments can be Numbers, Names, Arrays, or References.
2) This function ignores Empty cells, Boolean values, and Text, any Non-numerical values.

The following table explains that the list of functions will consider the text and logical value, but will not consider the text and logical values.

Examples

Let’s see some examples to understand how VAR Function will work.

  • Initially, you have to open your Excel workbook on your PC and launch a worksheet that has data.
  • For example, we have given a range of input values in B2:B10 and we will get the variance of the given values using the VAR function.
