Explanation of SMALL Function
- It is one of the built-in functions in Microsoft Excel.
- This function returns the Nth smallest value from the given range of data.
- For example, you can find the smallest value from the range or second-smallest value, or third-smallest value using this function.
Syntax
- Here, you will see the syntax of the SMALL function.
- To apply this function on your spreadsheet, you have to select a cell and enter the formula in the following format.
- Once you enter the formula, just click on the Enter button to get the result.
=SMALL(array, n)
Parameters Description:
- Array – The array or range of inputs from which you want to find the Nth smallest value.
- n – The position ( Nth smallest ) in the array or range that you want to be returned.
- For example, SMALL(B2:B6, 1) will return the 1st least value from the range of cells, and SMALL(B2:B6, 2) will return the 2nd least value from the range.
Note:
1) If the array is empty and then returns #NUM! Error value.
2) If the argument n is less than 0 or greater than the number of input elements, then it returns the #NUM! Error value.

- Initially, you have to open your Excel workbook on your PC and launch a worksheet that has data.
- For example, we have shown you a range of student’s marks in the following image. From which, we will find the first and second-smallest values using the SMALL function.
- Now, we need to enter the above-mentioned formula to get the result.
- After entering the formula, you need to click the Enter button to get the output, as shown below.
Input that Causes Error
- As we said earlier, If the argument n is less than 0 or greater than the number of input elements, then it returns the #NUM! Error value.
