  • It is one of the built-in functions in Microsoft Excel.
  • This function returns the normal distribution for the specified mean and standard deviation.
  • NORM.DIST Function returns values for the normal probability density function (PDF), and normal cumulative distribution function (CDF).
  • You can find the mean using the AVERAGE Function and find the standard deviation using the STDEV Function.

Syntax

  • Here, you will see the syntax of the NORM.DIST function.
  • To apply this function on your spreadsheet, you have to select a cell and enter the formula in the following format.
  • Once you enter the formula, just click on the Enter button to get the result.

=NORM.DIST(x, mean, standard_dev, cumulative)

Arguments Explanation:

  • x – It is the input value to which you want to find the distribution.
  • Mean – The arithmetic mean of the distribution.
  • Standard_dev – It is the standard deviation of the distribution.
  • Cumulative – The boolean value that represents the form of the function. If it is TRUE, this function returns the cumulative distribution function (CDF). If it is FALSE, it returns the probability density function (PDF).

Note:
1) If the argument mean or standard_dev is non-numeric values such as letters, and symbols, then this function returns #VALUE! Error.
2) If standard_dev is less than or equal to 0, then it returns #NUM! Error.

Let’s see some examples to understand this concept easily.

  • Initially, you have to open your Excel workbook on your PC and launch a worksheet that has data.
  • In the below screenshot, you can see the input ranges in Columns B & E their mean value is given in Cell I4, and the standard deviation is given in Cell I5.

  • The CDF values are displayed in Column C, PDF values are printed in Column F. Apply the above-mentioned formula to get the result, as shown in the following screenshot.

  • Finally, we need to click on the Enter button to get the result.
