Description of MEDIAN Function

  • It is one of the built-in functions in Microsoft Excel.
  • This function returns the median (middle number) from the given set of input numbers.
  • For example, =MEDIAN(10,20,30,40,50) returns the output median number 30.

Syntax

  • Here, you will see the syntax of the MEDIAN function.
  • To apply this function on your spreadsheet, you must select a cell and enter the formula in the following format.
  • Once you enter the formula, click the Enter button to get the result.

=MEDIAN(number1, [number2], …)

Arguments Description:

  • Number1 – It is the first input number or cell reference.
  • Number2 – It is an optional one. It can be a number or cell reference.

Note:
1) This function ignores Empty cells, logical values, and Text, any Non-numerical characters.
2) If all the given input numbers are odd, this function can calculate the middle number from the given set of input numbers.
3) If all the given input numbers are even, the median is calculated as the average of two numbers in the middle.
4) You can give input numbers up to 255 arguments in this function.
