Excel MAXIFS Function: Excel is a spreadsheet program that is developed for WindowsMacAndroid, and iOS. It helps to perform calculations on your PC. The purpose of this software is to do complicated calculations which are difficult to do manually. To get the largest numeric value from the range based on the given criteria, use the MAXIFS function in the worksheet.

Description of MAXIFS Function

  • It is one of the built-in functions in Microsoft Excel.
  • MAXIFS Function returns the largest numeric value from the range of input values based on the given condition or criteria.
  • This function supports logical operators such as (<, >, =, <>, ?, * ).

Syntax

  • Here, you will see the syntax of the MAXIFS function.
  • To apply this function on your spreadsheet, you have to select a cell and enter the formula in the following format.
  • Once you enter the formula, just click on the Enter button to get the result.

=MAXIFS(max_range, range1, criteria1, [range2], [criteria2], …)

Arguments Explanation:

  • max_range – The input range or array from which the maximum value will be found.
  • range1 – It is the first input range to evaluate.
  • criteria1 – This is the criteria or condition to use on the range 1.
  • range2 – It is an optional one. It is the second input range to evaluate.
  • criteria2 – It is an optional one. The criteria or condition to use on the range 2.

Note:
1) The max_range & criteria_range should be the same otherwise it returns #VALUE! Error.
2) This function ignores the Text, Logical values, Blank cells, and Special symbols.

Examples

Let’s see some examples to understand this concept easily.

  • Initially, you have to open your Excel workbook on your PC and launch a worksheet that has data.
  • For example, we have given the range of input values in Columns B and C and we will get the highest marks from this range using MAXIFS function.

  • Finally, we need to click on the Enter button to get the result. Drag down the first cell to fill the remaining cells as shown in the below image.
