What is the DECIMAL Function?

DECIMAL is one of the built-in functions in Microsoft Excel. It comes under Math functions. We can use this function in our spreadsheet whenever we want to convert an alpha-numeric number into a decimal value. Generally, alpha-numeric values are made up of 26 letters of the alphabet (A through Z) and the digits 0 through 9.

1) Syntax

  • This is the basic syntax of the Excel DECIMAL Function.

=DECIMAL(number, radix)

2) Arguments

  • number The input number which contains the alpha-numeric value.
  • radix The radix or base number to convert the input number based on it.

3) Motive

  • This Decimal function converts an alpha-numeric number into a decimal value.

4) Return Value

  • It returns the decimal number as output.

Note:
1) The input string length must be less than or equal to 255 characters.
2) If any of the arguments is an invalid value, it returns the #NUM! or #VALUE Error.

What Will DECIMAL Function Do?

As we said earlier, the DECIMAL function will convert an alpha-numeric number into a decimal value. This function is categorized as “Math” in Excel. Let’s see an example scenario to make you understand it easily.

Step 1: For example, we have a set of integers with different bases, and we need to convert them into decimal values based on the given radix using the DECIMAL function.

Alternate Example

Here we will see how to apply the DECIMAL function in the spreadsheet with simple examples.

1) Suppose you want to convert a specific number into a decimal number, then you can directly apply it to the formula.

2) If we want to get the decimal value of the ZZ based on the radix “36“, we can apply the following formula in a cell where we want the result.

=DECIMAL(“ZZ”, “36”)
